The same boat | Day 98 of my 2023 Journal

Cecilie Conrad·Apr 8, 2023· 3 minutes

When we walked to Saint Pete’s Cathedral on our sixth day in Rome, we walked in a huge crowd—feeling separated from all the other people yet connected to them.

We must not forget the love for all of humankind. It is so easy to be annoyed with other people, and it is a common trap to believe your perspective is proper and that others got it wrong. I sometimes talk with other radical people, and even in these conversations, it is easy to condemn those inside the box. Feeling smarter and better.

Let us not forget we all have a journey, and we are all worthy.

When I was very young, I had a strong connection with a Christian hippie monastery in Denmark. Strong powers of modern pure Christianity were taught to me, and I am forever grateful for the strong souls there, who separated all of the historical bullshit and all of the flaws of power and wealth accumulated in the history of the Christian church from the Truth to be found when we reach out to find God.

Underneath the wrongs was a pure vibe. Of awe. Of humility. Of respect. Of devotion. Willingness to act, study, enjoy, and share. I am grateful for every second I spend with these people.

Now, walking in a massive tourist crowd the Easter in Rome, it might be more important than ever to remember, we are all in the same boat. Our lives are about the people we touch, the vibe we send out, and the changes we can make.

I am not part of the modern apocalypse climate drama. This is not what I am talking about. Mainly because one of the most important things I learned in the abbey was not to be afraid. When we trust in God, we are not scared of the ocean. Even when the boat is small, and the wind is strong.

To me, this is one of the essential elements of Christianity: Never to be afraid, always walk away from fear, and trust in God instead. Another one, obviously, is the love for all that is alive.

The sculpture of humanity in the same boat is to be found on the piazza in front of the Cathedral of Saint Pete. It was a kind reminder of what is essential.
