Moments with Meaning: Coffee, Conversations, and Life's Little Lessons | Day 307 of my 2023 Journal

Cecilie Conrad·Nov 4, 2023

Birds. Sugar. Jesus. Balance.

On this particular Friday, I took only one photo. So, let’s see if I can stick to one point.

This one point.

Silke and I went out for coffee, in the morning.

Morning coffee with my daughter is one of the things I have been looking forward to being able to do. Yet, we have not grown a strong habit (yet). There are many things to do in our long mornings: Yoga, writing, working, studying, walking the dogs, running, preparing lunch.

Also, I have been taken aback by the prices, close to Copenhagen prices here at Playa. And the coffee I make at home is better than the one they serve me at the cafes. But all of that is noise. It really is. It shifts the focus from what is essential.

See, it is not about the coffee to have coffee with my daughter in the late morning on a touristy street in Mexico.

It is about the moment.

About sharing the “doing nothing,” the pause. About talking about whatever. About looking at people. Discussing things. Laughing. The quality and the price of the coffee are not relevant.

The universe works in funny ways, sending signals on all channels to everyone all the time, and in this situation, the energy I call God was kind enough to send me a symbol I have had close to my heart since I was a teenager. The symbol of God looking after the birds, the point of trusting in life, trusting we will always get what we need.

So, here we were, drinking overpriced coffee and enjoying the moment when birds arrived to share the moment by picking packages of sugar, opening them with amazing skill, and being part of the group enjoying their treat.

Jesus said: “Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.” I have thought about this many times in my ever-changing life.

And now, again, I was reminded: Just do what is right, and the Universe has your back. Reflection, planning, structure, and logic are just noises when the call is clear.

Just go have some coffee with your daughter. And lean into the moment, the love.

With love

Unschooling and Parent consulting, conversations, blogposts, and podcasts on family life and learning

Hi, I'm Cecilie Conrad. I'm a trained psychologist, mother of four, radical unschooler and full-time traveller. I have lived with unschooling for over a decade and help other families find their own path – whether it is about homeschooling, unschooling, or the bigger question of how you want to live as a family.

I offer guidance, conversations and talks. I call my work grandmothering – not coaching in the traditional sense, but presence, professional insight and concrete help navigating motherhood and finding your way home to your own values.

Am I the right person to help you? You can book a free discovery call, and we'll talk and figure it out.
