Exploring Queretaro: A Sunday Walk Full of Discoveries | Day 322 of my 2023 Journal

Cecilie Conrad·Nov 19, 2023· 3 minutes

Our Sunday walk in Queretaro was beautiful. Now, it feels like being in Mexico. It is, of course, an illusion to say Playa del Carmen is NOT Mexico, but this feels more real. More like the adventure we sat out to enjoy.

The Authenticity of Queretaro

And what a luxury to be around people who have been here for a long time and are our kind of people. We did not have to think a single thought; we did not have to pull out the map or make any decisions, as we were shown around and cared for with such a feel for details; it was so smooth.

Cultural Riches on the Streets

We enjoyed the streets and the street vendors with their crafts of embroidery and folded corn leaves; we enjoyed the buildings and details, the sunlight, the stories, the cacao, the water, and the street clowns.

Language Learning and Local Legends

At the end of the day, part of the group went home, and some stayed to hear legends of the city played by actors in the street. What a great challenge for the language learner! Some of us had bought the option of an English earpiece, and we discussed whether it made it easier or harder to understand the narrative with the dialect and the basic challenge of starting the right track at the right time. I did the raw version of just listening to the Spanish spoken word and had my learning journey right there.

Reflecting on a Day Full of Sensory Experiences

It was a lot to take in, and it was clear we were exhausted after the travel day. The decoration over the entrance to the church being a conquistador cutting off heads of Arabs?! Cutting off heads, at least. The doll (I took a photo of a painting of the doll) was everywhere. The Golden angel wings open for a photo shoot. The Aztec cacao with only a hint of seasoning. The change of the light. The book market made me want to buy a house.

But then again, would I have to live in it then?

With love
